An Epicenter of Entrepreneurial Spirit…
There’s a great deal we could share about Birmingham’s rich history which is not without its own past stains, as with most cities that were founded before the turn of the century. Birmingham is not the city it was, that’s for sure, and is on an evolutionary path to becoming a city that’s truly one-of-a-kind. To start with a fun fact, Birmingham is Corbitt Chandler’s hometown, Apex Current’s Founder & CEO. Corbitt grew up here and after over a decade growing his marketing career in Los Angeles, California, he was brought back to Birmingham for an executive role in 2015. It’s rather fitting given just over two years later, Apex Current was born in the same city as Corbitt.
Birmingham has a foundation in entrepreneurship and opportunity that runs as deep as the city’s inception. Well before the city was even officially bestowed the name “Birmingham.” The picture seen above is a combination of two separate images. In the background of the image, we have downtown Birmingham. The larger buildings in the back center of the image are dubbed the “Heaviest Corner on Earth,” given to the corner of 20th Street and 1st Avenue North in the early 20th century. The name reflects what happened to be the near simultaneous appearance of the four tallest buildings in the United States’ southern region, in the early 1900’s.
In the foreground of the image, we see the original structures that sit atop what is now the Elyton Hotel in downtown Birmingham. “Elyton” references one of the city’s earliest entrepreneurs, who named the town Elyton (Ely Town) 50 years before it became Birmingham in 1871. These original structures are part of what celebrates the city’s earliest beginnings, and rich history of prosperity and entrepreneurialism - a spirit that’s been seriously reignited over the past decade.
Corbitt would tell you that Birmingham has grown in leaps and bounds since his time growing up here. These leaps and bounds include the impressive food and fare from names like 2019 James Beard Award-Winner, Frank Stitt with his restaurant, Highlands, and Iron Chef winner, Chris Hastings with his two restaurants, Oven Bird and Hot and Hot Fish Club, an increasing number of eclectic local breweries like Good People Brewing, Avondale Brewing, TrimTab, Ghost Train, etc. as well as new additions to downtown like Regions Field where the Baron’s play (Birmingham’s Minor League Baseball Team) and Regions Park, which sits next to Regions Field.
Finally, this spirit of entrepreneurism that has been reignited includes tech startups like the Shipt app, which in 2018 was acquired by Target for $550 million. That same year, HospiceLink and TheraNest, both Birmingham startups, were acquired as well, making those two acquisitions combined with Shipt’s total over $1 Billion. There have been many others and many more that are on the cusp of cutting edge technologies that can parlay into and serve a number of different verticals.
At Apex Current, we love being incorporated in and invigorated by this type of environment. We’ve had tremendous growth here, and it’s safe to say, that we’re proud of our home city. Ironically, since the day Corbitt founded Apex Current, we’ve always served more clients outside of Birmingham, as opposed to clients located inside Birmingham. Not for any reason other than the fact that we see ourselves as the marketer’s marketer. By that we mean, that not only do we train and teach digital marketing to business owners (including other agencies), but we practice what we preach.
Generally speaking, the majority of our clients have come from outside of Birmingham (as well as the state) because we run our own digital marketing campaigns to generate new business. This unique element to what we do combined with technology in this day and age - especially for companies which provide digital services like we do - there aren’t any sort of limitations to our services outside of our local marketplace. We’ve served clients with locations from San Francisco like 77 Plastic Surgery to New York City like ROSEBOX NYC and just about every major city in between. We’ve also collaborated with clients in South America like Farmfolio, the EU like StrongFit and Thailand like Strength & Surrender.
Again, we’re proud of our city and here’s to much more growth in the decade ahead! No matter where your business is located, make sure to complete the form by clicking the green button at the top of this page and request your free consultation. We love helping businesses soar with what we do and would love to talk to you about how we can help your business grow through performance-driven digital advertising.
